Tomorrow morning, Saturday, me and my Collibosher bandmates are up at the crack of dawn (well, for a weekend!) and a practice session, then midday on Sunday it will be down to Brighton for PCS Conference.
I’m looking forward to a good week, I think that PCS has much to be proud of, but the struggle continues uphill in the absence of other unions who sold the Pensions Heads-of-Agreement to their members. Some will take the opportunity to attack the leadership of PCS, but both in the DWP and Nationally, the Left Unity candidates have been returned with almost a clean sweep (only one NEC candidate missing out). Some people do need to get a handle on reality – look at what’s going on in the country and the unions generally, and put the performance of PCS into perspective. Until we get Harry Potter on our NEC, I’m not expecting magic!
We will of course be debating the national campaign on Pay, Jobs and Pensions. Recent developments, such as the TUC calling for cross-union action in October, are welcome. My worry is that some “leaders” will want to let off steam then cave in afterwards. Which is what shouldn’t have happened after November 30th last year. And wouldn’t have if the other unions had a leadership like ours.
There is a word, corrupted from Cockney Rhyming Slang, “bottle”. When I was a kid, the phrase was “he dropped his bottle” meaning he panicked. Bottle and Glass, I’m sure you can work it out. Well a few union leaders dropped their bottle. That’s the reality of the situation as I see it. That’s why they jumped at the non-Agreement. Their members as well as ours are left to pick up the pieces. That’s why I am so happy that the Left Unity people got re-elected to run our union. The alternative might call themselves “4themembers”, but basically they are made of the same stuff as the bottle-droppers!
Back at the weekend, and on Sunday 27th it’s Collibosher time again! We will be playing in the Cherry Tree in Wood Lane, Dagenham, at 4pm, as a public warm-up before our charity gigs the weekend after. All friends welcome.
Busy busy busy!
